The imperative to settle bets in accordance with published rules

Posted Thursday 25th April 2019

In a recent blog, the Gambling Commission reminded operators to settle bets in line with their published rules – as required by provision 4.2.6 of the Social Responsibility Code.

The blog also provided a few tips to help operators meet the Commission’s expectations, including:

  • “In addition to [publishing new] rules, you should use additional methods to notify customers of change[s to rules]… For online operators, this could be through information provision on relevant market screens, through pop-ups and on betting receipts.”
  • “Make sure that consistent information is provided. For example, your published rules should not conflict with information displayed on a market screen or available through ‘Help’ or ‘FAQ’ pages”.
  • “Ensure software updates are managed effectively and tested to ensure accurate settlement is maintained”.

This is a useful reminder for operators changing their rules regarding the settlement of bets, to ensure that all relevant departments (e.g. legal, marketing and IT) are fully briefed and apply a consistent approach to those new rules.
