Mariam Khaliq

With more than 15 years of UK immigration experience, Mariam sits with Joelson’s Employment & Immigration team as the Head of Immigration. Her extensive experience covers a wide range of immigration and nationality law and enables her to predict and plan for the complex legal and logistical issues that often arise in immigration matters. She works collaboratively with the firm’s employment and corporate teams as well as external agencies on immigration matters

Mariam is kept busy by a diverse caseload which includes businesses as well as private clients. She advises private clients including senior executives and high-net-worth individuals, advising on moving their families and businesses to the UK. Mariam is also the account lead on a number of corporate accounts for small and medium-sized enterprises across the professional services, hospitality and tech sectors. She supports investors and entrepreneurs in addition to businesses looking to relocate to the UK or employ migrants under the Skilled Worker or Global Mobility routes. On the private client side, Mariam enjoys cases involving British nationality and applications under Appendix FM and the EUSS. She also receives instructions from the local authority with respect to children and young people in their care who have immigration related issues.

Mariam has also represented clients in cases before the First-Tier and Upper Immigration Tribunals, the Administrative Court and the Court of Appeal. Mariam has successfully settled several judicial review challenges with costs being awarded in favour of her clients. She has also been called upon to act as an expert witness in family law proceedings.

Before joining Joelson in 2024, Mariam was a member of the Worldwide Private Client team at a global immigration firm where she assisted HNW individuals and high profile clients as well as businesses. Prior to this, she headed a successful immigration team in a West End law firm dealing with a broad spectrum of immigration work. She has been listed in Legal 500 for immigration law between 2014-2023. In 2022 Legal 500 referred to her as “highly professional […] with excellent knowledge…”.
