Matthew Needham-Laing

Matthew Needham-Laing is a solicitor since specialising in construction and engineering law with a focus on litigation and dispute resolution since qualifying as a solicitor in 1994.

Prior to qualifying as a solicitor.  Matthew practiced as an Architect for 10 years working primarily on commercial large projects in and around London.  Matthew is still a registered architect and also a member of the Fire Protection Association the UK leading fire safety and prevention organisation.  As such Matthew has a unique skill set ideally suited to dealing with fire safety claims and was widely quoted in the media following the Grenfell fire as a result.

Recent experience in relation to fire safety claims includes the following:

  • Advising a large national residential developer on the merits of pursuing fire safety claims against contractors employed on its projects where building safety defects had been discovered.
  • Advising and acting for tenants on building safety claims where the Landlord has failed to progress any remedial works to the buildings occupies by the tenants
  • Advising a local authority in relation to building safety defects discovered in a residential tower block in excess of 18 metres in height.
  • Advising a landlord of student accommodation in relation to building safety defects discovered in the student building and also advising on the construction contracts for the remedial works.

Other litigation experience:

  • Acting for a luxury hotel group in relation a building defects claim following a multi-million pound refurbishment of the hotel.
  • Acting for a German manufacturer of pipes in relation to an LCIA arbitration concerning allegations of defective pipes installed on a gas pipeline across the Black Sea.
  • Acting for a railway maintenance contractor in relation to a series of adjudications concerning extensions of time and loss and expense on rail possession contracts
  • Acting for a pharmaceutical company in relation to the construction of a new pharmaceutical research and manufacturing facility where the certain sub-contractors and the project managers had defrauded the client during the construction of the facility.
